Sierra Leone delays sale of 709ct rough diamond

12 april 2017
Sierra Leone has postponed the sale of a 709.41-carat rough diamond found last month by a local artisanal miner to allow bidders “more time” to take part.
Rapaport reports that prospective buyers would now view the diamond until May 10 at the Bank of Sierra Leone in Freetown.
The process was previously set to end on 6 April.
Government said that buyers would make an offer on May 11, adding bids would be received and opened on the same day.
The stone, found by Pastor Emmanuel A. Momoh, was presented to Sierra Leone’s president.
A 969 carat diamond found in 1973 at Diminco Mine was the largest ever diamond to be recovered in the country.
