Norilsk Nickel intends to build a solar power plant in Russia’s Zabaykalsky region by the second half of 2025, which will become part of the company's decarbonisation efforts.
The pilot project of a solar power plant with a capacity of at least 518 kW is planned to be implemented due to the favourable natural and climatic conditions of the region, in particular, thanks to its high insolation rating.
The Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant (MPP) will be the main consumer of solar electricity.
"Having our own source of electricity based on renewable energy sources will reduce indirect energy emissions of greenhouse gases and the carbon footprint of our products. During the day, the rotational camp will be supplied with electricity from the solar power plant, and at night - from the centralized power supply," said Stanislav Seleznev, Vice President for Ecology and Industrial Safety at Nornickel.
The company says that the cost of electricity during the useful life period of the power plant will amount to 3.8 rubles per kilowatt, which is a good figure for the Zabaykalsky region.
