U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) plans to begin collecting additional data on diamond provenance from importers subject to sanctions on Russian goods.
This update will require importers to provide the information on country of mining for diamonds, in addition to self-certification statements to verify that the imports do not contain goods of Russian origin.
The document did not specify whether importers needed to give evidence or the carat sizes to which the rule applies. As of September 1, 2024, the US has banned imports of Russian non-industrial diamonds weighing 0.50 carats or more.
At the same time, imports of certain jewellery that exclude diamonds “will have the option to disclaim the additional data requirement.”
