The Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs (FAEA) and Norilsk Nickel have signed an agreement aimed at supporting the indigenous peoples of the Russian Arctic.
One of the main social projects within the framework of the agreement was the educational program "Indigenous Peoples of Russia. School of Public Diplomacy". It is designed to increase the expert potential of indigenous peoples.
"The primary responsibility for respecting the rights of indigenous peoples, of course, lies with the state. It sets basic legal standards. However, subsequent progress requires an expansion of voluntary commitments, including within the framework of corporate business policies," said Igor Barinov, head of the FAEA.
In turn, Nikolai Utkin, First Vice President of Norilsk Nickel, said that the long-term program to support indigenous peoples has proven the effectiveness of private-public cooperation in the interests of local communities.
“Working in partnership with the state to develop Arctic territories, we strive to improve the quality of life of northerners and preserve the unique culture of indigenous peoples,” he concluded.
