The Zambian government has authorised the Kashime copper mine project, located in the Upper Lusemfwa area of the Mkushi district in Zambia, to commence mining operations.
The project is primarily being developed by Mimosa Resources, while First Quantum Minerals will finance and conduct further exploration within the licence area.
Mimosa Resources executive chairperson Jordan Soko was quoted by Mining Weekly as saying that the Kashime project demonstrated Zambians’ ability to own and develop mining operations and contribute to the country’s economic and social development.
“We look forward to developing this resource responsibly, creating value for the local communities in Mkushi, and contributing significantly to Zambia’s goal of increasing copper production. This project represents a shared vision for growth and opportunity in the mining sector,” he said.
Mkushi Mayor Melson Chilemu thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for hearing their cry.
“This authorisation, achieved after over 15 years of struggle, is a testament to perseverance,” he said.
Mimosa Resources said in September 2024 that it had attracted an initial $3-million investment from Zeta Resources to fund final feasibility studies and preparatory development work at the Central Province site.
The development of the Kashime mine and processing complex is anticipated to have wider developmental benefits for the communities around the mine, Mkushi town, and across Zambia, as it contributes to the national aspiration of three million tonnes of copper production a year in the medium term.
