A giant deposit of copper, gold and silver has been discovered in the heart of the Andes, geo.fr reports.
Located in the Vicuña region, which stretches from San Juan Province (Argentina) to the Atacama region (Chile), the deposit contains at least 13 million tons of copper, 32 million ounces of gold and 659 million ounces of silver.
“[This] has been one of the most significant greenfield discoveries in the last 30 years,” said Jack Lundin, chief executive of Canadian company Lundin Mining, which manages the project jointly with the Australian mining group BHP.
“The initial mineral resource has highlighted the potential for one of the highest grade undeveloped open pit copper projects in the world and one of the largest gold and silver resources globally,” Lundin added.
