Implats seeks an alternative SO2 emissions limit for SA operations

18 july 2025

Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) intends to apply for an alternative sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions limit at its Rustenburg processing facility in South Africa, ensuring operational continuity while implementing long-term compliance measures.

Implats' Rustenburg facility processes platinum group metals (PGMs) mined from its local operations.

Mining Weekly reports that the JSE-listed mining group disclosed this initiative through a detailed public notice in a local newspaper on Thursday.

The proposed temporary SO2 limit would maintain legal operations while finalising a permanent solution to achieve sustained regulatory compliance.

The application follows Implats' existing postponement agreement with South Africa's National Air Quality Officer, which currently exempts the company from full compliance with Minimum Emission Standards (MES) for particulate matter and SO2 emissions until 31 December 2024.
