Fancy colored diamond market slowly stabilizes, but prices continue to decline

01 august 2025

Fancy colour diamond prices continue to decline for the fifth consecutive quarter. According to the Fancy Colour Research Foundation (FCRF), the price index for the second quarter of 2025 declined 0.5%. Despite the ongoing decline, the Foundation sees encouraging signs that the market is stabilizing.

After a 0.3% drop in the first quarter and a 1.1% fall in the fourth quarter of 2024, the combined impact resulted in the steepest annual decline since the index was created in 2014 — a 2.2% drop in 2024. However, analysts at the New York-based FCRF believe that the situation could change, especially in the vivid pink and blue diamond segments, which are already showing signs of recovery after a sharp price decline of 10-20% in 2023.

Several sub-categories that experienced declines in recent quarters have now shown notable recoveries," the FCRF stated in its latest report. "While overall price appreciation remains modest, the market appears to be adjusting with caution and discipline."

In the second quarter, pink diamonds of all sizes and intensities declined 0.4% (0.1% in the first quarter); blue diamonds fell 0.3% (0.5% less than the previous quarter); and yellow diamonds continued to decline, falling 0.7%, in line with the first quarter.

In individual categories, the 1.5-carat Fancy Vivid Blue showed the best performance, rising 3.01%, while the 3-carat Fancy Intense Yellow showed the steepest decline, falling 3.00%.

According to the FCRF, while global economic indicators in stock and commodity markets remain generally positive, the colored diamond sector continues to demonstrate selectivity and restraint.
