US to greenlight certain categories of Russian diamonds until September 1, 2026

28 august 2025

The US Treasury Department has allowed the import of certain categories of diamonds of Russian origin, mainly those exported from Russia before 2024.

TASS cites an excerpt from the US Treasury Department's memo, according to which diamonds of Russian origin weighing 1 carat or more are cleared for import if "they were located outside the Russian Federation and were not exported or re-exported from the Russian Federation", starting from March 1, 2024.

In addition, the license allows the import of diamonds weighing 0.5 carats or more if they "were located outside the Russian Federation and were not exported or re-exported from Russia", starting from September 1, 2024.

In 2024, the US banned the import of any rough and polished diamonds of Russian origin weighing more than 0.5 carats, regardless of whether they were processed in third countries.

Previously, the import of gem-quality diamonds of Russian origin over 0.5 carats into the US was permitted until September 1, 2025.
