A unique diamond mined by AGD DIAMONDS named after painter Alexander Borisov

A diamond mined by AGD DIAMONDS at the V. Grib deposit last June was named “Alexander Borisov” in honor of the painter who dedicated his creative work to the Arctic and the North.
Traditionally, the largest and rarest diamonds mined by AGD DIAMONDS are named after prominent figures of the Arkhangelsk Region and Russia. This time, residents of the Arkhangelsk Region were invited to vote. In addition to Borisov, other candidates included physician Elikanida Volosevich and polar explorer Ivan Papanin. Borisov was a winner, with 1,189 votes.
Alexander Borisov (1866-1934) was a native of the Krasnoborsky District, the Arkhangelsk Region, and the first prominent painter in the world to dedicate his art works to the Arctic. He took part in the artistic expedition to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, after two years of preparations for the journey. Among the expedition’s main results were hundreds of sketches and landscapes created directly in the vast icy expanses, in the harsh conditions of the Far North. These sketches formed the basis for the monumental paintings created by painter Borisov upon his return from Novaya Zemlya. Alexander Borisov was the first Russian painter to make the Arctic a central theme in his art works. His paintings are currently in the collections of various museums across Russia, including the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, and the Arctic and Antarctic Museum.
It’s worth noting that this diamond was the first large one (over 50 carats) mined at the V. Grib deposit this year. The use of advanced, highly efficient technologies enabling more accurate identification of diamonds in the ore allows the company to regularly recover particularly large rough diamonds.
