China launches new e-commerce platform to revive diamond market

07 november 2025

The World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), GET-Diamonds (GET), the world's largest online diamond trading platform under its umbrella, and the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE) announced a strategic partnership and unveiled a new e-commerce platform. Its goal is to revive China's diamond market and increase transparency in the global diamond trade.

The Shanghai Diamond Exchange, China's only authorized diamond import and export channel, will host the platform, which aims to enhance transparency, trust, and global access to the Chinese diamond trade. This initiative marks a significant step toward reaffirming China's status as one of the world's leading diamond jewelry markets.

In the early 2000s, the Chinese diamond market experienced explosive growth, reaching approximately $7 billion in annual turnover by 2020. By 2024, turnover had fallen to $5.7 billion, with China giving way to India. Analysts attribute this slowdown to competition from lab-grown diamonds and changing consumer preferences. However, as consumer confidence in lab-grown diamonds declines, interest in natural diamonds has begun to resurgence.

According to WFDB President Yoram Dvash, this platform will be a great asset for both Chinese industry players and global suppliers of polished natural diamonds, who previously struggled to enter the Chinese market.

Shanghai Diamond Exchange President Lin Qiang is confident that "this deal helps our members to trade freely amongst themselves and source polished goods from India and beyond."

The collaboration was officially launched at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), which will be held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, 2025.

The platform brings together over 1.5 million natural diamonds from over 1,200 trusted suppliers, offering members exclusive tools, real-time market data, and global reach, cementing a new era of digital diamond trading.
