Trafigura Group has signed a first-of-its kind $800 million critical metals insurance policy with the Saudi Export-Import Bank (EXIM) during the Future Minerals Forum 2026 in Riyadh.
Under the policy, Saudi EXIM will provide credit insurance for Trafigura’s multi-year prepayment transactions with mining companies worldwide.
The collaboration enables Saudi Arabia’s sustained access to critical metals and minerals and strengthens its role in global supply chains, Trafigura said in a statement. At the same time, the company has already completed the first transaction under the new terms, a copper prepayment facility to an unnamed global metals producer.
"We are pleased to have signed this landmark agreement with Saudi EXIM. Its innovative financing structure – with our first deal already completed – demonstrates how Export Credit Agencies and commodity trading companies can work together to support the development of critical metals and minerals supply chains," said Gonzalo De Olazaval, global head of Metals and Minerals at Trafigura.
The agreement further enables mining value chains and strengthens the Saudi Arabia’s presence in critical minerals markets, in line with the objectives and programs of Vision 2030, Saudi EXIM representative said.
