Trafigura subsidiary to begin construction of a 20MW green hydrogen plant in Great Britain

16 march 2026

MorGen Energy, Trafigura’s wholly-owned subsidiary, has approved the construction of a 20MW green hydrogen production facility in Wales with the support of British authorities.

The West Wales Hydrogen is among the first projects supported by the UK Government’s hydrogen allocation round (HAR), and is set to produce approximately 2,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year.

The construction of the plant is expected to begin this year, and commissioning is slated for early 2028. The hydrogen will be used across a broad range of applications, including port decarbonisation, industrial heating, manufacturing and chemical feedstock, Trafigura noted in a statement.

"The UK government's hydrogen support framework was key to this project reaching final investment decision - demonstrating how public policy and private capital can work together to support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries," said Trafigura CEO Richard Holtum.

"The West Wales Hydrogen project reflects Trafigura's ability to commercialise emerging commodity markets, connecting new supply with customers seeking reliable, low-carbon solutions."

The project will deliver low-carbon hydrogen that fully complies with the UK’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard and is expected to achieve over 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions savings annually.
