Arkhangelsk Region kicks off a diamond mining project

16 march 2012

A contract aimed at developing the Grib Diamond Pipe in the Arkhangelsk Region was signed including the construction of a mining and processing mill in the area, according to www.dvinainform.ru.
It should be reminded that in the Mezen District of the Arkhangelsk Region works are underway to develop the Grib Diamond Pipe and in the coming years the mine will start commercial production of diamonds on the White See coast.
Today, the regional administration signed a contract to build a processing plant and tailings complex in the diamond field. The contract was signed for one year and its cost will be about 3 billion rubles.
A large-scale mining and processing plant is scheduled for construction in 2013. Russia’s Ministry of Regional Development put the project on the list of priority investment projects in the North-West Federal District.
The region will get one and a half thousand new high-paying industrial jobs, as well as additional revenues to the state budgets of all levels.
"Development of the diamond deposit in the Mezen District is one of the most important events for the Arkhangelsk Region. It will allow us to strengthen our position in the diamond market," Igor Orlov, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, said.
The Grib Diamond Pipe is located 130 km north-east of Arkhangelsk. The diamond field reserves are estimated at 98.5 million carats.
It is assumed that commercial production of diamonds will begin in late 2013. To start the project it will be necessary to build roads inside the open pit, carry out landfill operations on construction sites, and erect the main power complex, a permanent field camp, as well as many other facilities.
