CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, has announced the featured gemstone and the dates of its third annual gemmological mini conference. Entitled "Tourmaline Day," the conference will take place during the 2012 CIBJO Congress (May 17-20) and VICENZAORO Spring (May 19-23) in Vicenza, Italy, according to CIBJO’s statement e-mailed to Rough&Polished.
Exclusively focusing on tourmaline, a mineral group that includes gemstones of many colours which are sourced on all five continents, the conference will include a series of presentations and discussions about current gemmological research and knowledge. It will take place on Saturday, May 19, from 15:00 to 18:00 hours, in the Palladio Room at Fiera di Vicenza.
The "Tourmaline Day" gemmological mini-conference will coincide with the first day of VICENZAORO Spring, and is being organised by CIBJO in full cooperation with Fiera di Vicenza, the chief sponsor and host of the 2012 CIBJO Congress.
The conference is the initiative of Dr. Margherita Superchi, a renowned Italian gemmologist who is the immediate past president of the CIBJO Gemmological Commission. She originally proposed three years ago that an annual gemmological mini conference become part of the CIBJO Congress, which she noted brings together participants from across the jewellery sector, where gemmology is a common interest and concern. CIBJO Congresses, said Dr. Superchi, are ideal events for gemmologists, jewellers and other industry professionals to discuss recent gemstone research and to offer and receive gemmological updates.
