De Beers’ Diamond Trading Company (DTC) supplied rough worth $1.12 billion to Sightholders for manufacture in southern Africa in 2011, equal to the same figure in 2010, the miner said.
It said in a 2011 report to “Society” that over $5.3 billion in rough diamonds was sold to Sightholders in producer countries, since their beneficiation programme was formalised in 2007.
De Beers said that it was supporting the development of sustainable manufacturing industries in the countries it operated in.
It said with a 29 percent growth in the price of rough diamonds over the course of 2011, the group was able to increase payments to stakeholders around the world to $6.4 billion from 2010’s $5.0 billion.
Of this, $4.4 billion was paid to stakeholders in Africa compared to $3.33 billion in 2010.
