The South American nation of Guyana has denied reports that it has suspended all gold and diamond mining activities in the country's rivers, Diamond Intelligence reported cited by Israelidiamond.co.il. The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) made explicit in a public statement that reports claiming that the country had halted all mining activities due to ecological damage they are said to be responsible for as false.
The GGMC stated in response to a number of inquiries that while it is currently reviewing its own environmental protection oversight policies, it has not implemented any outright ban on mining, diamond or otherwise. However, until such time as the review has been conducted and the resulting recommendations of the inquiry have been issued, the government does not plan to issue any additional mining concessions along the country's rivers.
The GGMC review, which is slated to be carried out in a month's time, will include the cooperation of country's Ministry of Natural Resources and a diamond industry organization, the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA).
