Airline Deccan Charters Limited has announced that it is establishing new flight routes between several centers of the diamond trade in India, to the delight of local traders, the Times of India reports cited by Israelidiamond.co.il. The flights will connect Surat, the world's largest diamond cutting and polishing center, with other Indian diamond industry satellite centers.
DCL will commence flights between Surat, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar, starting on August 20. Additionally, flights between Ahmedabad and Kandla will be launched beginning a week later on August 27. Initially, DCL will only be using two small airplanes to ferry passengers, containing only nine seats in each plane, but a senior official with the company stated that they will upgrade to larger aircraft in the future.
Diamond industry insiders notes that one possible reason for servicing smaller diamond producing centers in India by air is that the transport of merchandise over land entails no small amount of risk of theft, according to the Times of India.
