Arkhangelsk Region to Increase Annual Diamond Output to 4 Million Carats by 2014

28 september 2012

The total diamond output on the territory of the Arkhangelsk Region shall multiply to reach 4 million carats per year by 2014, according to a statement by Governor Igor Orlov speaking at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry with presentation of investment potential of the region, PRIME reported.
In 2011 the Arkhangelsk Region produced a total of 0.5 million carats of rough diamonds. The Governor noted that deposits located on the territory of the Arkhangelsk Region account for 20% of the total inferred diamond reserves in Russia.
“It is noteworthy that having significant diamond resource base and operating mines, the region lacks development of associated processes, i.e. diamond sorting and forming of lots. We will embark on it soon,” – the Governor added.
Diamond mining in the Arkhangelsk Region is conducted by OJSC Severalmaz being a subsidiary of OJSC AK ALROSA.
