The American diamond industry did not see a brisk trade in the month of October, with both imports and exports of both rough and polished diamonds slipping, Diamond World reports cited by Israelidiamond.co.il.
Imports of polished diamond to the United States fell to 881,166 carats' worth, valued at $1.441 billion. These imports represented a 26% year-over-year drop based on volume and a 21% year-over-year drop based on value. The country's exports of polished diamonds fell 5% in dollar value to $1.12 billion, bringing the U.S.'s net polished imports to $321 million, almost exactly half of the October 2011 figure.
The U.S. imported $27 million of rough diamonds in October 2012 and exported $20 million of rough diamonds for the month. The former figure represents a 27% year-over-year decline and the latter figure represents a 13% year-over-year decline.
All told, the U.S.'s net diamond account for October 2012 was $328 million, according to Diamond World – again, almost exactly half of the October 2011 numbers.
