ZMDC in new Marange diamond mining JV

18 december 2012

The Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has partnered Ge Nyame, a Ghanaian company to mine diamonds in Marange.
ZMDC chairman Goodwills Masimirembwa was quoted by Zim Daily as saying that Ge Nyame was already on the ground carrying out exploration work with mining activities expected to commence next February.
“Negotiations with them started about a year ago and they are now on the ground doing some exploration work,” he said.
“They are in partnership with ZMDC on a 50/50 percent basis and as we speak, we have installed processing equipment. Some more equipment is being imported and mining is expected to commence in February next year.”
This development brings to six the number of companies operating in Marange.
Some of the firms already mining in the area were Marange Diamonds, Mbada Diamonds, Anjin, Diamond Mining Company and Zim Diamonds.
Marange diamonds were last month cleared to trade on the international market without KP monitors.
However, the U.S and EU sanctions against companies mining diamonds in Marange were still in place.
