In a daring gold heist, members of a suspected professional gang of thieves gained entry into the Tanishq jewellery store at Panjagutta, by making a hole in the rear wall. They decamped with 18 kg gold and 12 kg of precious stones, worth total Rs 22 crore in the early hours of Saturday, 25th Jan 2014.
Afterwards a youngster sauntered into a local TV news channel office in Hyderabad late on 26th Jan night claiming that he had committed the sensational Rs.5.97 crore gold heist from Tanishq showroom at Punjagutta two days ago. Taken aback by his claims, the West zone police took him into custody and reportedly recovered the stolen jewellery from his house.
The young man took the police team to his room in the neighborhood, where the stolen gold was found. Police are now questioning him and his two roommates. The unemployed man reportedly told the TV channel that he alone committed the theft to create a sensation, and to draw people’s attention. He said he had drilled a hole in the rear wall of the shop to enter the shop, then broke open the locked table counters and looted the gold ornaments and stones.
