Belgium's polished diamond exports in June were flat at $1.363 billion, according to data released by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, cited by Rapaport. In terms of volume, exports fell 13 percent to 557,817 carats. Polished diamond imports rose 5 percent to $1.509 billion, leaving net polished exports with a deficit of $146 million, or nearly twice the amount from June 2013.
Rough diamond imports jumped 20 percent to $1.301 billion and rough diamond exports increased 5 percent to $1.325 billion, leaving net rough imports with a deficit of $24 million compared with a deficit of $178 million in June 2013. The net diamond account in June fell into a deficit of $122 million compared with an export surplus of $103 million one year earlier.
During the first half of 2014, Belgium's polished diamond exports increased 6.3 percent to $7.567 billion, while polished diamond imports rose 6.1 percent to $7.4 billion, leaving net exports 19 percent higher at $167 million. Rough diamond imports, meanwhile, jumped 12.1 percent to $7.86 billion and rough diamond exports increased 7.5 percent to $8.143 billion, leaving net rough imports with a deficit of $283 million compared with a deficit of $559 million one year ago.
Belgium's net diamond account for the first six months of 2014 dropped 36 percent year on year to $450 million.
