Expert: a "digital twin" should be created for Norilsk

14 september 2022

A "digital twin" is a digital copy or representation of a physical object

A "digital twin" should be created for the Norilsk further development and included in the city's development strategy, said Alexander Vorotnikov, Deputy CEO of Project Office for Arctic Development, at a meeting of the Project Expert Center’s discussion club.

A "digital twin" is a digital copy or representation of a physical object.

"Now a digital twin is a very important topic. <...> Why not make such a project in Norilsk, a digital twin of the city. If we develop, make, prepare and launch such a project, this will allow us to manage the development of Norilsk very clearly and competently", - said Vorotnikov.

According to him, such a project should be included in the Norilsk development strategy until 2035, which is currently being implemented in the polar city. Dmitry Karasev, Mayor of Norilsk, noted that steps are being taken in this direction. “At this stage, we have a picture of housing and public utilities, public transport, we have a picture from some public places, but they have not been transformed into the Smart City system, and we would like to move in this direction and will be grateful if such a system part appears," Karasev said.

About the Norilsk Comprehensive Development Plan

The Norilsk Comprehensive Development Plan until 2035 provides for ₽120.1 billion of investments. The federal budget funds sponsored ₽24 billion, the Krasnoyarsk Territory - ₽14.8 billion and Nornickel - ₽81.3 billion.

Norilsk is one of the northernmost cities in the world. It is home to 180,000 people, 26% of whom are Nornickel’s employees. The city’s mass building was carried out in the 1940s-1950s and 1960s-1990s. New construction projects are not currently being implemented. According to Nornickel's previously announced plans, about 100 new houses with a total area of 400,000 square meters will be built by 2035.
