These data are presented by the participants of the annual scientific and practical seminar on the topic "Analysis of hydrometeorological processes in the Arctic seas and hydrometeorological support of marine operations in the Arctic 2022", conducted by the St. Petersburg Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
As noted by the speakers, well-known Arctic scientists, in the western part of the Russian Arctic - in the Barents and Kara Seas, where the average annual temperature exceeds the norm, on the contrary, there is a decrease in the area occupied by ice.
Experts also told about another feature of 2022 - the preservation of residual ice in larger volumes, 20-25% higher than last year.
The total area of ice cover in the Arctic Ocean as of the end of June (the period of the greatest ice cover) it amounted to 10,504 million sq km. This is 4.6% less than the average annual values over the past 40 years and close in magnitude to the average value for a decade, experts said.
