The expert considers it necessary to create a waste management code in the Arctic

10 january 2023
The Code regulating waste management on ships should be developed to implement the principles of responsible navigation in the waters of the Arctic zone of Russia. This opinion was expressed to TASS news agency by the Chairman of the Board of the Arctic Development Project Office Nikolay Doronin.
"The implementation of the principles of responsible shipping can begin with small steps. First of all, it is the adoption of a certain code regulating the handling of waste on ships. (...) Restrictive measures on the part of the state may be aimed at punishing negligent boatmasters for improper handling of fuels and lubricants and dangerous goods," he said.
Doronin noted that very often garbage is thrown overboard, which leads to an increase in the volume of plastic and microplastic waste in coastal Arctic settlements.
Earlier, the head of the federal project "Clean Arctic" Ruslan Gubaidullin noted that the issue of responsible shipping in connection with the problem of dumping waste into the seas should be settled in the Arctic.
