Russian companies increased cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route by 3% in 2022

18 january 2023
By the end of 2022, cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) at the expense of Russian companies increased by 966.000 tons. The increase compared to 2021 was 3%, the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route (Glavsevmorput) reported.
In total, 34 million 34.000 tons of cargo were transported along the Northern Sea Route in 2022, which is 2 million tons higher than the target of the federal project "Development of the Northern Sea Route".
According to the Glavsevmorput, during 2022 cargo traffic increased primarily due to the transportation of liquefied natural gas.
"LNG shipments exceeded the same indicator in 2021 by 1.2 million tons (1.258.000 tons), container cargo transportation increased by 226.000 tons, bulk cargo transportation increased by 109.000 tons. Novatek and Norilsk Nickel are among the leaders in the growing cargo traffic. Gazpromneft makes a serious contribution to the overall cargo flow along the NSR," said Sergey Zybko, General Director of Glavsevmorputi.
Seven nuclear-powered ships are currently operating in the waters of the Northern Sea Route for icebreaking support of Arctic investment projects, three of which are the most powerful in the world: "Arctic", "Ural" and "Siberia", ttelegraf.ru writes.
