Brazil intends to become an observer in the Arctic Council

30 january 2023
Brazil intends to become an observer in the Arctic Council, Brazilian Ambassador to Russia Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares told reporters.
According to him, the country has a "special interest" in the Arctic region and its capabilities.
The Arctic Council is an intergovernmental organization of Arctic states consisting of Russia, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Norway, the USA, Finland and Sweden. Due to the events in Ukraine, Western countries froze in March 2022 cooperation with Russia, which chairs the Arctic Council. Nevertheless, this did not affect Moscow's implementation of the program of the Russian presidency.
In 2013, China and India received observer status in the Arctic Council, which gave them the opportunity to actively participate in its work at all levels: from task forces to working groups.
