Summer expedition to clean up the Russian Arctic from technogenic garbage

17 february 2023
The Russian Geographical Society (RGS) has announced the recruitment of volunteers for the summer expedition "Arctic. General cleaning" on cleaning the Russian Arctic from technogenic garbage.
This year, from June to October, it is planned to carry out work in the Taimyr settlement of Khatanga, on Kildin Island in the Murmansk region and Wrangel Island.
During the expedition volunteers will clean up, monitor and collect environmental and other data, develop recommendations for the development of tourist routes, and also take part in the creation of popular science and educational content for travelers.
It is customary to use the Northern Sea Route to clean up the Arctic from the technogenic garbage accumulated since the USSR. The Russian military has removed almost 30.000 tons of scrap metal from the Arctic in seven years, the Taimyr Telegraph news agency reported.
