Russia and India discuss Russian-Indian trans-Arctic container line

31 march 2023
New areas of Russian-Indian economic cooperation were discussed at the talks with the participation of Alexei Chekunkov, the head of the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East, during a working visit to India, the ministry's Telegram channel reports.
The main topic of the meeting with Sarbananda Sonowal, Indian Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, was the use of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) for reliable and safe transportation of goods. The potential of the Northern Sea Route, as well as the dynamics of its development, was presented by the special representative of Rosatom Vladimir Panov.
The creation of an alternative route for the delivery of goods from India to Europe was discussed - not along the southern or western routes, but along the eastern route through the NSR, using both Russian and Indian port facilities. It was especially noted that the cost of shipping a container from Vladivostok to India is one third lower than the cost of shipping a container from Moscow. Promising areas of cooperation: the creation of a Russian-Indian trans-Arctic container line, the construction of processing facilities near the NSR and the expansion of the fleet, including using state support mechanisms operating in the Arctic.
