Rosatom ready to receive data from Chinese satellites on shipping on the Northern Sea Route

06 april 2023
Rosatom State Corporation is considering the possibility of creating a ground infrastructure for receiving data on navigation on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from Chinese satellites.
For the development of year-round safe navigation along the Northern Sea Route, it is necessary to increase the number of sources of information that will improve the accuracy of forecasts of the ice situation.
"Rosatom State Corporation, from the point of view of the digital ecosystem of the NSR, is technically synchronized with Roscosmos and is ready for integration in receiving and processing satellite information. (...) And we are looking very carefully at cooperation with our Chinese colleagues - they have spacecraft working on the Northern Sea Route. We are thinking about creating an appropriate ground infrastructure for receiving data from Chinese satellites," said Maxim Kulinko, Deputy head of Rosatom's Northern Sea Route Directorate.
Rosatom is the infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route and is responsible for the organization of navigation on the NSR, the construction of infrastructure facilities, navigation and hydrographic support and navigation safety system in severe Arctic conditions.
In August 2022, the Government of the Russian Federation approved a plan for the development of the NSR until 2035 with a total amount of funding of about 1.8 trillion rubles. According to the plan, the annual cargo flow through the NSR should reach 150 million tons by 2030, 220 million tons by 2035, ttelegraf.ru writes.
