The results of the development of science during Russia's chairmanship in the Arctic Council

20 april 2023
A two-day meeting of the IV Arctic Science Ministerial (ASM4), held in St. Petersburg, was devoted to summing up the results of scientific activities within the framework of Russia's chairmanship in the Arctic Council, goarctic.ru writes.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the governments of St. Petersburg and the regions of the Arctic zone of Russia, foreign diplomatic structures, leading Russian research centers, the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.
According to Nikolay Korchunov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Chairman of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Arctic Council, over these two years the foundation of Russian Arctic science has further strengthened, the geographical range of scientific relations has expanded, a scientific and technical council has been established within the framework of the State Commission on Arctic Development. Also, consortia of universities and research centers continue to be created, which are open to international cooperation.
At the same time, due to the acute geopolitical crisis, the activities of the Arctic Council are currently practically frozen, which leads to the development of a closer partnership between Russia and non-Arctic countries.
"We have been working actively and energetically lately, developing ties not so much with the Arctic formats, which are now stagnating, as with other organizations. We see great interest from the BRICS countries, the SCO, Latin America, and the Persian Gulf countries. We see that climate issues are of concern not only to the countries of the Arctic region," Korchunov said.
He stressed that scientists are currently working on ideas for a comprehensive study of the global impact on our planet of the three poles – the Arctic, Antarctica and high-altitude Asia.
On May 11 2023 the official transfer of the chairmanship of the Arctic Council from our country to Norway should take place. In this regard, the ASM4 participants in St. Petersburg unanimously expressed confidence that scientific research in the Arctic can be carried out only on the basis of joint international efforts.
