The airfield for "big aviation" is open on Severnaya Zemlya

25 april 2023
A new snow-ground airfield designed to receive heavy transport aircraft has been put into operation on the Bolshevik Island of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, located north of the Taimyr Peninsula on the border of the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea.
The airfield will become the main link in the logistics of polar expeditions held under the auspices of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, porarctic.ru reports.
The new facility will serve as a transshipment base serving an ice self-propelled station (LSP) "North Pole": with its help, the supply of the expedition will be organized and the rotation of scientists will be ensured.
Heavy transporters will arrive at the Bolshevik, and then employees and cargo will be delivered to the place of drift of the LSP or to the navigation area of the expedition vessel – by small aircraft.
Another benefit from the launch of the airfield is associated with the activities of the largest Russian hydrometeorological observatory "Cape Baranova Ice Base".
It is expected that the airfield located next to the observatory will help improve and facilitate its supply.
