Rosatom receives a license to host a low-power nuclear power plant in Yakutia

28 april 2023
A low-power nuclear power plant will be built in the polar Ust-Yansky ulus of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Rostechnadzor issued a license for its construction to Rosenergoatom Concern, which is part of the Rosatom state Corporation, porarctic.ru reports.
The NPP will be built using a modern domestic development – the RITM-200N water-water nuclear reactor, which is a version of the rector adapted for ground-based execution, used on advanced nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project.
Rosatom claims: the reactors of this series have already been tested in real conditions of the Arctic, while they meet all modern safety requirements. Due to its compact dimensions and modularity, the new NPP can be built faster than its "full-size" counterparts.
The commissioning of the low-power nuclear power plant, which is scheduled for 2028, will become an important factor of economic growth in the Yakut Arctic.
The new NPP will allow launching a large mining project at the Kuchusskoye field with a capacity of about 4.5 tons of gold per year, simultaneously creating prerequisites for further development of the natural resources of the region.
The population of the republic will also benefit – the NPP will supply remote settlements with sustainable electricity supplies.
