The reason for the sharp change in temperature in the Arctic may be planetary waves

08 may 2023
The reason for sudden temperature fluctuations in high latitudes may be changes in the parameters of the earth's atmosphere, lasting for more than two weeks. This is the conclusion reached by the researchers of St. Petersburg State University.
Physicists used a mathematical model to study the effect of planetary waves with periods from 3 to 16 days on the large–scale circulation of the atmosphere - these are global fluctuations in parameters such as pressure, density, temperature, wind speed. The duration of "tides" and "ebbs" can reach 30 days, RIA Novosti writes with reference to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Experiments have shown that waves may well cause disturbances in the stratosphere, which lead to extreme warming and cooling in the Arctic zone and temperate latitudes.
Earlier, scientists suggested that the acceleration of the water cycle in the Arctic could affect the entire ecosystem. Russian geophysicists believe that the Arctic could have warmed up sharply due to powerful earthquakes. The ice in the Arctic has become thinner, and their durability is shorter.
