The first tanker with Yamal liquefied natural gas in 2023, accompanied by the icebreakers “Arctic” and “Siberia”, passed to Asia along the Northern Sea Route (NSR).
The destination is not specified, but it is assumed that the ship delivers gas to China. The Chinese National Oil and Gas Corporation CNPC, with which a 20-year gas supply contract has been signed, and the Chinese Silk Road Investment Fund have shares in the Yamal LNG project.
Last year, navigation on the NSR was opened later – the first tankers went in mid-June, goarctic.ru notes.
Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, said earlier that Rosatom and NOVATEK will launch year-round navigation in the eastern part of the Northern Sea Route in early 2024.
The head of the Ministry of Regional Development Alexey Chekunkov, speaking about the cargo turnover of the NSR, predicted an output of 100 million tons by 2026-2027 and 200 million tons by 2031. “NOVATEK, Rosneft, Gazprom Neft, Norilsk Nickel have invested trillions of rubles to produce and export these cargoes,” the minister said.
