Rosatom reports on the final stage of testing of the Yakutia nuclear icebreaker

25 august 2023

Sea trials of the nuclear icebreaker Yakutia (project 22220) are in the final stage. This was announced by the Science Advisor of JSC Rusatom Overseas (part of Rosatom) Semyon Musher.

Yakutia belongs to the line of new universal nuclear icebreakers (project 22220), which are being built by order of Rosatom and are the largest and most powerful in the world. It is assumed that they will contribute to the opening of year-round navigation in the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route.

According to TASS, three universal nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 are currently operating in the waters of the Northern Sea Route: "Arctic", "Siberia" and "Ural". Currently, the construction of the third and fourth serial icebreakers is underway – Yakutia (the contract deadline is December 2024) and Chukotka (the contract deadline is December 2026).

Earlier, the General director of JSC Baltic Plant Alexey Kadilov reported that during the construction of the icebreaker "Yakutia", launched in November 2022, it was necessary to urgently look for a replacement for imported parts.
