Russian scientists will study polar bears in the Arctic using an artificial intelligence (AI) and neural network, lenta.ru reports.
According to Geographical Sciences MD Vladimir Chernooak, the organizer of the expedition, polar bears are an excellent indicator of the state of the ecosystem in the Arctic: if there are problems with it, then, accordingly, the number of these animals decreases.
In autumn, scientists from St. Petersburg will go to the Bear Islands archipelago, where they will study predators using the latest technologies.
According to Chernooak, experts have created a neural network and a computer vision system that will help decipher images taken in the Arctic and recognize polar bears against the background of snow.
In some cases, the neural network will be able to determine the sex, weight and age of the animals. Scientists will also use satellites and unmanned aerial drones to collect data.
