A permafrost map with a 50-year forecast to be created by Yamal scientists

31 october 2023

The Scientific Center for the Study of the Arctic will create a dynamically changeable map of the state of permafrost on the territory of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, the press service of the governor of the region reports.

"The map will provide prompt access to data on the state of permafrost and the main characteristics of soils. It will reflect not only the current year, but also the forecast for the period of up to 50 years. Data will be loaded into the map from specialized sensors that are installed on the territory of the district - now there are 71 of them," the report says.

The permafrost map will make it possible to monitor the condition of capital construction facilities, ensuring stable operation of fuel and energy facilities, civil and industrial infrastructure of the district, and will also help to develop technologies and materials for the construction of buildings and roads in a timely manner.
