Japanese authorities to assess consequences of US sanctions against the Arctic LNG-2 project

13 november 2023

The Japanese government will study the situation around the Arctic LNG-2 project that it develops jointly with Russia and other members after U.S. authorities have imposed sanctions against it. This, according to TASS, was stated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura.

"We plan to thoroughly study this issue in cooperation with the parties involved," Nishimura stressed. He also noted that sanctions against Arctic LNG-2 will have a certain effect, and therefore Japan "intends to cooperate with G7 countries to prevent disruption to stable energy supplies."

On November 2, the US Treasury included Arctic LNG-2 LLC, which is constructing a natural gas liquefaction plant, in its sanctioned entities list. It also set January 31, 2024 as the deadline for the completion of transactions with the Arctic LNG-2 project.
