A new gas liquefaction complex to be built in the Arctic

21 december 2023

NOVATEK's project to build a liquefied natural gas plant in the Murmansk Region enters the implementation stage.

In early December, the gas company registered the Murmansk LNG firm. Its main activity is the production of hydrocarbons and their derivatives, as well as the transportation of gas through pipelines, wholesale of liquefied petroleum gases, production and transmission of electricity, according to TASS.

It is assumed that the plant will have three liquefaction lines capable of producing 6.8 million tons of LNG per year. Construction of the first line is scheduled for August 2024, and commissioning is scheduled by the end of 2027. The third line is planned to be put into operation by the end of 2029. Facilities will be located in the sea on gravity-type bases - special platforms that can be held by their own weight. The Arctic LNG-2 plant was built in a similar way.

The new plant will use the exclusive Arctic Mix liquefaction technology, patented by NOVATEK. It is planned that the gas for the plant will be produced by the company itself at its own fields on the Gydan peninsula, which then will be supplied via the Volkhov - Murmansk - Belokamenka 1,400 km gas pipeline with a capacity of 40 billion cubic meters per year.
