U.S. do not coordinate actions in the Arctic with the international community

26 december 2023

The statement by the U.S. authorities about the expansion of its continental shelf in the Arctic beyond 200 nautical miles means the country is ignoring the international community since such actions cannot be taken unilaterally and must be agreed upon, said Russia's minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic Alexey Chekunkov as reported by TASS.

"This is an action that highlights the US disregard for international formats [of cooperation]. Any such actions must be coordinated by the international community and cannot be taken unilaterally," the minister said.

According to him, due to the militarization of the Arctic and unilateral actions that lie outside the plane of international law, the United States continues to undermine the established system of international relations and the system of international law that existed for decades.

"This is an unpleasant trend that adds instability and uncertainty in a key region for economy and trade," Chekunkov said.
