Russian senator proposes to compose academic history of the Arctic

07 march 2024

Anatoly Shirokov, a senator from the Magadan Region and a deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs, proposed to compose an academic history of the Arctic.

According to TASS, the senator announced the proposal at the IX international scientific and practical conference "The Far East and the Arctic: Sustainable development".

"In Russia, there is an academic history of Siberia, there is an academic history of the Far East. We do not have an academic history of the Arctic. The Arctic country does not have its own history of the Arctic written by its scientists. I think this is a colossal flaw," Shirokov said.

At the same time, he noted that scientific centers are currently operating in Arkhangelsk, Yakutsk and Magadan.

The proposal to compose an academic history of the Arctic is planned to be included in the resolution of the conference.
