The transportation capacity of the Northern Sea Route will increase to 150 million tons by 2030 and to 220 million tons by 2035, said Alexey Chekunkov, Russia’s Minister for Development of the Far East and the Arctic.
"It is planned to increase the carrying capacity of the Northern Sea Route to 150 million tons by 2030, to 220 million tons by 2035," he said, speaking at a plenary session of the State Duma.
According to Chekunkov, the Far East and the Arctic occupy more than half of Russia's territory. Despite the low population, they provide a significant volume of production of key export goods. At the same time, the exploration of these territories is a state priority. "The government has launched a series of mechanisms, thanks to which, over the past ten years, the pace of economic development of these territories has been higher than the national average," Chekunkov said.
Businesses have received preferential conditions, and infrastructure projects are being stimulated. To improve the quality of life of people, the state has launched a preferential mortgage, provided free plots of land, added preferential tariffs for air transportation.
According to Chekunkov, today the ministry faces the task of further development of the Far East and the Arctic. It is necessary to build more than 1,200 new facilities, ensure the development of transport corridors, pnp.ru reports.
