Russia and China to create special commission for NSR development

21 may 2024

After a visit of Russian president to China, the countries agreed to create a joint commission on the development of the Northern Sea Route.

"A decision has been made to create a joint commission for the development of the NSR. On the Russian side, this is the activity of Rosatom. On the Chinese side, it will be headed by the Minister of Transport of the People's Republic of China," said Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation.

According to him, the potential for increasing cargo turnover along the NSR is up to 50 million tons of Chinese transit by 2030. But the area of responsibility of the future commission includes not only Chinese transit. "We also involve our partners in aspects of Arctic shipbuilding, port improvement, and logistics centers. This will really be a joint project in the interests of both countries," Likhachev added.

This year, regular transportation between Arkhangelsk and China will begin along the Northern Sea Route.

The total amount of cargo transported along the route since the beginning of this year is 10.19 million tons, which is 72,000 tons (0.7%) higher than the same period of last year, goarctic.ru reports.
