Russia builds naval vessel to gain strategic advantage in the Arctic

09 july 2024

The universal ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin of project 23550, which has begun sea trials, will provide Russia with a strategic advantage in the Arctic, according to Asia Times columnist Gabriel Onrada.

"The unique project 23550 has taken a special place among Russian icebreakers, as it can break ice up to 1.7 meters thick and is capable of fighting in polar conditions," Onrada said.

According to him, this vessel reflects Russia's extensive interests in the Arctic, and also shows the strengthening of the country's military strategy in the region.

Ivan Papanin is equipped with a 76-mm AK-176MA cannon and optionally container launchers for cruise missiles Club and Caliber, which significantly increases its combat capabilities, www.gazeta.ru notes.
