New large transport hub for the Northern Sea Route may be built on the Yenisei river

23 july 2024

The Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot) and Rosatom agreed to establish transport hubs on the Yenisei, Ob, Irtysh and Lena rivers to improve cargo transportation. It is planned to accumulate cargo in future hubs for shipments via the Northern Sea Route, flagman-news.ru reports.

"The efficiency and safety of waterways depend on the work of the Rosmorrechflot, which directly affects the connectivity of Russian territories, their economic growth, and also contributes to strengthening international cooperation," Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a meeting with the head of Rosmorrechflot Andrey Tarasenko.

In turn, Tarasenko noted that the creation of hubs is a priority task of the department.

"Today, for example, the rivers are very good, the big ones – the Ob, Irtysh, Lena, Yenisei – are not fully used. (...) Therefore, Rosatom and our agency agree that the creation of certain hubs on such Arctic and northern rivers will help accumulate cargo for the Northern Sea Route," he said.
