Yakutia and Chukotka have become leaders in cleaning the Arctic territories from abandoned facilities that can cause environmental pollution, the press service of the Clean Arctic - Vostok-77 expedition reported.
The expedition of the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences started in August 2023 from Murmansk and conducts research in the regions of the Arctic, Northern Siberia and the Far East.
Experts have compiled a map of the objects of the economic heritage of the USSR to be disposed of or preserved. In total, 393 objects will have to be removed in seven regions of the Russian Arctic, among them non-working mines, airfields, port facilities with equipment.
In Yakutia and Chukotka, the number of objects liquidated before the beginning of 2024 is more than 50% of the total number discovered, ysia.ru reports.
