Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Dixon, Tiksi and Pevek are the Arctic ports that need to be developed in Russia as a priority so that the Northern Sea Route (NSR) becomes one of the main transport routes of Russia, said Nikolai Patrushev, assistant to the president of the Russian Federation, who oversees issues of national maritime policy.
The development of the transport and logistics potential of the Northern Sea Route plays a key role in the development of the Arctic zone, Patrushev stressed, speaking in Murmansk at a meeting on ensuring the national interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic.
The importance of the NSR as a transport corridor and the shortest route between Europe and Asia is growing, he added.
"In order for the Northern Sea Route to assume the role of one of the main transport routes in Russia, it is necessary to modernize the infrastructure and ensure the development of ports of the NSR, with priority given to Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Dixon, Tiksi, Pevek," Patrushev said.
According to him, it is also necessary to more actively use the potential of inland waterways and Russia’s largest rivers, such as Lena, Ob, Yenisei, as well as canals, in particular the White Sea-Baltic one.
As a result, the transport connectivity of the Northwest, Siberia and the Russian Far East will be significantly improved, TASS reports.
