Russia expects record cargo traffic on NSR in 2024

09 september 2024

The Ministry of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic expects that the volume of cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in 2024 will be a record and exceed last year's figures by 3% - 5%, First Deputy Head of the Ministry of Regional Development of Russia Gadzhimagomed Huseynov told TASS.

In 2023, the NSR transported 36.2 million tons of cargo.

"Today, we are ahead of last year’s figures by about 3% - 5%. We are going with an increase relative to last year of about 1 million tons. Of course, this trend will continue. We expect that there will be a record [volume of cargo transportation]," he said.

For his part, the head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, noted a slowdown in the growth of transportation along the NSR. According to him, this is due to the huge sanctions pressure, which only underlines the importance of developing this area.
